How does the abortion pill work?
The early option “abortion pill” is a series of medications designed to terminate pregnancy, usually without the need for surgery. You can typically take the abortion pill within your first 10 weeks of pregnancy. If you decide that the abortion pill might be right for you, please give us a call to schedule an appointment. Our staff will perform a pregnancy test. If you test positive, then our medical staff will perform a physical exam and ultrasound. You and the medical staff will then determine if the abortion pill is the right choice for you.
If you choose pregnancy termination, the abortion pill method works as follows:
Day 1: The mifepristone pill will be administered in our center. This first phase of the abortion pill blocks your body’s progesterone hormone so your pregnancy doesn’t continue to progress.
Day 2 -3: 24 - 48 hours after taking the mifepristone pill in our center, you will take the misoprostol pills in the privacy and comfort of your own home. The abortion process can take up to 48 hours. The caring and knowledgeable staff and physician at Rose Women’s Medical Center will be available to you 24/7 for any questions or concerns that arise.
Day 7: Our staff will call to schedule a follow-up appointment for you to make sure that the abortion process was successful.
Day 9 - 16: The abortion process should be fully completed.
*Alcohol, herbal and dietary supplements should be avoided during the abortion process. Be sure to tell your doctor if you are on blood thinners, anticoagulants, or any other prescription medications.
If a surgical abortion is deemed necessary, we will assist you in scheduling a procedure at a facility affiliated with our staff.
How long is the recovery after pregnancy termination?
With the abortion pill, you will experience some cramping and bleeding. You will want to rest for at least a day or two, or as long as is determined by the physician's staff.
If you need to discuss your pregnancy termination options, please call to schedule an appointment at Rose Women’s Medical Center, or use our online scheduling tool.
